A lot of unexpected things have happened at Newcastle United in recent months. But this is something that absolutely nobody could have seen coming. Eddie Howe is set to leave as manager of the club.
Howe had been taking charge of the Magpies during pre-season and it had looked like he was going to continue on in his role. But it looks like he has now decided that the time has come to move on.
According to a report from Craig Hope for the Daily Mail, Howe is set to leave Newcastle United. It is understood that the manager has been contemplating his future for some time and has come to an agreement with the club to end his tenure.
The information has been confirmed by several other reliable outlets as well. So, Howe will not continue as Newcastle United manager. But why?
Why is Eddie Howe leaving as Newcastle United manager?
At this point in time, all we can do is speculate. But one has to imagine that it might have something to do with how things have been run lately.
Over the past twelve months, we have seen players like Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali. Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis Hall and Nick Pope could follow in this window.
On the other hand, the Magpies have not made enough of an effort to replace them. At least last summer, they had tried by bringing in someone as highly-rated as Nick Woltemade.
Yes, it did not go according to plan, but the vision was clear. This time around, they have just gone about signing youngsters, with the oldest of them being 20 years of age.
Newcastle United’s plan has shifted
It is very clear that Newcastle United are trying to build a sustainable project here. And immediate success might no longer be on top of the wishlist. The ceiling seems to have shifted from becoming the new Man City to being the next Brighton & Hove Albion or Bournemouth.
Not too long ago, Newcastle United were seen as a team that were trying to build a winning project under new ownership. And Howe showed signs that he was capable of delivering.
He took Newcastle United into Europe on more than one occasion. The Englishman was also successful in ending their long trophy drought by winning the League Cup.
That is a memory that the supporters will always keep close to their hearts. And now that his time is coming to an end at St James’ Park, it is safe to say that he will be viewed as a club legend. We can only wish him the best of luck.
