Toni Kroos is one of the greatest midfielders in the history of the game. So, the fact that Newcastle United are being linked with someone being compared to the German midfield maestro should be enough to excite the fans. Of course, with Sandro Tonali leaving for Tottenham Hotspur, some quality is needed in the middle of the park.
Newcastle United are said to be preparing an opening bid for Johan Manzambi of SC Freiburg. He has been an absolute standout in the ongoing World Cup with Switzerland. But the Magpies also need another profile. Someone who can sit deep and dictate the tempo of the game.
That is where the Kroos-esque profile comes in. Also, it is noteworthy that the Bundesliga seems a particular area of focus for Newcastle United this summer, as they are also close to signing Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim.
According to Kicker (via Bulinews), Newcastle United are among the clubs actively holding talks over a move for Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller.
Newcastle United want to sign Angelo Stiller
Stiller is 25 years of age and is primed to take the next step in his development. He has been linked with some of the biggest teams in football in recent times, including Real Madrid. But such a move simply has not materialised so far.
The report always goes on to mention a potential release clause worth €36.5 million in his contract with Stuttgart. That figure would make him an even more attractive target for top clubs capable of meeting it without a problem.
Now, it remains to be seen whether Newcastle United end up making their move for Stiller or not. On paper, it would make all the sense in the world.
Why Angelo Stiller fits Newcastle United’s needs after Sandro Tonali exit
At 25 years of age, Stiller is entering his prime. But at the same time, he has a decent bit of experience under his belt as well and has represented Germany at the international level.
That might be the exact profile that Newcastle United need right now. So far, they have been largely linked with youngsters like Toure and Manzambi.
But the club cannot overlook the need for experience in the squad. They have lost a decent bit of it with Anthony Gordon and Tonali leaving. Nick Pope and Joe Willock are expected to do the same. So, Stiller would help fill some of that void.
At the same time, it is worth mentioning that Newcastle United’s interest in Lamine Camara of AS Monaco seems to be headed nowhere of note. So, they will need to shift midfield targets.
All things considered, a move for Stiller would be a very good one, at least theoretically. Of course, as we all know, it is impossible to predict how any transfer will go.
