Newcastle United are looking to bring in reinforcements in several positions this summer. One of them has to be striker. The club saw Alexander Isak last season and were not able to replace him adequately, which was a primary reason behind their poort campaign.
Nick Woltemade made a bright start to life at St James’ Park but faded away quickly. By the end of the season, he was often not even playing as a striker.
On the other hand, Yoane Wissa scored one league goal after a £50 million-plus move. So, the Congo international failed to meet expectations as well.
Anthony Gordon was playing centrally quite often last season. He has left for Barcelona as well. So, all in all, Newcastle United do not have enough quality there. An American international has caught their eye recently. Unfortunately, it looks like Chelsea want him as well.
Chelsea and Newcastle United eyeing former Arsenal striker
The World Cup will be a great place to scout talent this summer. And an in-form striker seems to have grabbed the attention of both Chelsea and Newcastle United.
The player we are talking about is none other than Falorin Balogun. Chelsea have now joined the race for the American international striker’s signature.
While Balogun has done well for the United States at their home World Cup so far. But he has been in terrific form at club level as well.
The former Arsenal striker currently plays for AS Monaco in Ligue 1. He scored 19 goals for them across all competitions in the previous season. Five of those came in the Champions League, including a brace against PSG.
Where will Balogun end up?
That just goes to show the progress that Balogun has made since leaving Arsenal, where he probably did not get a fair shake in the first place.
Still just 24 years of age, it might be time for Balogun to make his return to the Premier League. Will it be for Chelsea or Newcastle United though?
Chelsea already have Joao Pedro. Nicolas Jackson is a potential option as well. And then there is the incoming Emmanuel Emegha. Game time might be a lot easier to come by at Newcastle United.
Of course, it is very possible that no move happens and he ends up staying on in Monaco. A €50 million transfer fee will be required to even get the Ligue 1 club to the negotiating table.
