Expect Newcastle United to be linked with several players over the course of the summer transfer window. Not all of them are going to have the seal of approval from Pep Guardiola though.
It looks like Newcastle United are now leading the race to sign a player Guardiola described as ‘top class’ just last season. Merely that should be enough to excite the supporters.
One of the areas where Newcastle United need to strengthen this summer is between the goal posts. And Manchester City’s James Trafford is a target for them.
Reports have emerged suggesting the Magpies are now front-runners to sign Trafford. And even though he was the backup option for Guardiola last season, the Spaniard’s comments show how highly he actually rates the 23-year-old goalkeeper.
Pep Guardiola’s comments on James Trafford
Trafford had to play second fiddle to Gianluigi Donnarumma at Manchester City last season. But that does not mean that he was not rated by Guardiola.
While speaking about Trafford last season, Guardiola said (via City Report):
“He’s a keeper; it’s one or one. He cannot play left-back. In that moment, it’s Gigio playing in that position.
“But he’s a top class keeper, there’s no doubt about that! I’m really pleased he can play more games [in the Carabao Cup].
“He played in the Champions League, you know?! I’m a guy who wants to give opportunities to everyone… I rely on him!”
Trafford played just 17 times last season. He conceded 13 times and kept 8 clean sheets. And although chances were few and far between, and mostly in cup competitions, the Englishman did what was asked of him and impressed at every opportunity.
Trafford never conceded more than two goals in a single game. And he was the starting goalkeeper for the entirety of Manchester City’s FA Cup and League Cup runs, both competitions they won.
Newcastle United should complete James Trafford deal as soon as possible
Trafford has all the makings of one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League. It would come as a surprise if he does not prove to be a success, wherever he ends up next.
Newcastle United should do everything possible to get this deal over the line in the near future. They cannot allow other teams the time and chances to enter the race and sign Trafford from under their noses, similar to what happened with Victor Munoz.
If Newcastle United are able to sign Trafford, it could mean the end of their goalkeeping problems for the next decade. Still just 23 years of age, that it he very least you would expect.
Obviously, it could mean the end of the road at St James’ Park for Nick Pope. He has done a great job over the last four seasons, but it might be time for a change of scenery for the 34-year-old.
