Newcastle United will be looking to sign a striker in this summer transfer window. The club saw their main man, Alexander Isak, leave last year to join Liverpool. And while he has not met expectations at Anfield so far, the Magpies have been far worse off without him.
Nick Woltemade was brought in to replace Isak. While the German international appears to have all the tools one could ask for, it simply has not worked out for him at St James’ Park.
Also, Newcastle United have lost further quality this summer with Anthony Gordon leaving for Barcelona. So, they will need to bring in reinforcements up top. But unfortunately, it looks like Everton are making moves to sign one of their transfer targets.
According to Football Insider, Everton have offered Liam Delap a contract as they accelerate plans to sign him this summer. The Toffees are now in pole position to bring in the Englishman.
Everton update is bad news for Newcastle United
Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Delap for several weeks now. The Englishman had a rough debut campaign at Chelsea.
Having joined from Ipswich Town in a £30 million deal, Delap was touted to be a Diego Costa-esque presence up top for Chelsea. Well, he managed just one Premier League goal for the Blues and his time at Stamford Bridge might already be over.
It is believed that Chelsea would want around £40 million for Delap. But one would imagine that there would be room for negotiation on that fee.
If Newcastle United do want to sign Delap, they will need to move quickly. Everton have clearly taken the lead already and might end up getting a deal over the line in the near future if they can find agreements with both the club and the player.
Would Liam Delap be the solution to Newcastle United’s problems?
Delap might have had a poor season with Chelsea, but that does not mean that he has lost all his qualities. Yes, he probably is not as good a many would have thought.
That being said, Delap has his qualities. And tactically speaking, the move to Chelsea might have been a bad idea from the very beginning.
Delap is the kind of striker who thrives in space. He needs to make runs behind the defences that are stretched and eat up the yards. That is what he did at Ipswich Town.
He never got those circumstances at Chelsea. Most teams are happy to sit back against the Blues, play a low block and find joy on the counter. Those tactics rendered Delap ineffective, especially when he came late into matches trying to find a goal.
Would he get those conditions at Newcastle United to succeed? Or would signing Delap be another wrong move on the part of the Magpies?re
