Newcastle United are expected to remain busy in the summer transfer window. Unfortunately, quite a few of their players could be on their way out after the club missed out on European qualification, having finished 12th in the Premier League.
Sandro Tonali is the most high-profile name who could be on his way out. Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Manchester City are all believed to hold interest in signing the midfielder from Newcastle United this summer.
In fact, Tottenham Hotspur have already made a couple of significant bids trying to sign Tonali. Even though those have been turned down, it might be only a matter of time before the Magpies’ resolve breaks.
Interestingly, it looks like Newcastle United might reignite their interest in someone they had tried to sign before eventually completing a move for Tonali back in 2023.
Sky Sports journalist confirms Newcastle United’s interest in signing Borussia Dortmund midfielder
According to Sky Sports reporter, Keith Downie, Newcastle United are considering a move for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha.
Eddie Howe is a big fan of Nmecha. He had come close to signing him for Newcastle United in the summer of 2023 but instead opted for Tonali. Now, that the Italian international could be on his way out, it looks like the time has come to revisit that interest.
There is a €85 million (£73.5m) buy-out clause in Nmecha’s Borussia Dortmund contract. But Newcastle United would be looking to pay less than that.
So, if Borussia Dortmund are not willing to budge on that figure, pulling off a deal would be difficult. It remains to be seen where we stand over the coming days and weeks. Nmecha is currently away at the World Cup as he is representing Germany at the tournament.
Could Felix Nmecha replace Sandro Tonali for Newcastle United?
Of course, I have already covered the club’s interest in Nmecha for Read Newcastle. Now, it remains to be seen if this leads anywhere of note or ends up as mere speculation.
Nmecha certainly has the quality to make the move to Newcastle United and take the team forward. He is established at Borussia Dortmund.
Nmecha scored 5 goals and provided 2 assists in 42 appearances for Borussia Dortmund across all competitions last season. On top of that, he is also impressing for Germany at the World Cup.
Another added advantage would be the fact that Nmecha spent his entire youth development days playing for Manchester City. So, the English game is well known to him.
