- Newcastle United stars set for World Cup duty
- Five of them could be influential
- Magpies fans will want to keep an eye on them
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is here, and Newcastle United fans have plenty of reasons to stay glued to their screens this summer. With the tournament spread across the United States, Canada and Mexico, seven Magpies have made the trip.
Football will be televised daily for the next five-and-a-half weeks. The St James’ Park faithful will be tuning in to see Eddie Howe’s men represent their countries.
With that said, here are five to keep a close eye on during the greatest footballing tournament in the world.
Bruno Guimaraes – Brazil
The beating heart of Newcastle’s midfield, Bruno Guimaraes heads into this tournament as one of the most coveted players in world football. Carlo Ancelotti has named him in Brazil’s squad, and with the Selecao in a group featuring Morocco, Haiti and Scotland, he should get plenty of minutes.
A big tournament from Bruno could define his and Newcastle’s future. He will bring his leadership qualities to a Brazilian side that hasn’t won the competition since 2002.
Yoane Wissa – DR Congo
Yoane Wissa has come under heavy criticism after joining Newcastle from Brentford last summer for £55m. The Magpies forward was selected in the 26-man DR Congo squad and will be eager to shine on football’s grandest stage.
Powerful, direct and with an eye for the goal, he has all the tools to be a standout in what promises to be a fiercely competitive tournament. He’ll be up against Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan in Group K to begin with.
Tino Livramento – England
Tino Livramento earned his England call-up alongside Dan Burn, continuing his rise as one of the most exciting young full-backs in the country. Rapid, energetic and composed in possession, the right-back has the attributes to shine on the international stage.
This World Cup could be the moment Livramento truly announces himself to a global audience. He could make his tournament debut in Group L against Croatia, Ghana and Panama.
Dan Burn – England
A fan favourite on Tyneside, Dan Burn’s inclusion in the England squad is well deserved after a series of dependable performances. The defender is part of Tuchel’s squad and brings composure, aerial presence and experience to a backline that needs leaders.
Burn had been eager to make the World Cup squad, and he achieved his dream. He has been a Tuchel favourite since the German replaced Gareth Southgate.
Anthony Elanga – Sweden
Anthony Elanga was named in Graham Potter’s 26-man Sweden squad, and the winger will be eager to show what he can do on football’s biggest stage. Explosive and direct, Elanga has the tools to be a game-changer for the Swede.
The former Nottingham Forest attacker might also want to send a reminder to the Toon faithful of just what they have in their ranks. He encountered a topsy-turvy start to life at St James’ Park last season and comes up against Tunisia, the Netherlands and Japan in Group F.
