- Ewen Jaouen has arrived in Tyneside
- Newcastle United have agreed fee with Reims
- Goalkeeper set to become Eddie Howe’s first summer signing
Ewen Jaouen is set to become Newcastle United‘s first signing of the summer in what is a massive boost for Eddie Howe.
According to the Shields Gazette, the French prodigy is currently in Tyneside to thrash out the final details of his move, with his medical set to take place later today.
Newcastle agreed a £24m deal with Reims for Jaouen, who is set to sign a four-year deal at the club.
The Magpies have moved decisively for the 20-year-old and will look to build on it in the coming weeks with a handful of other signings.
Ewen Jaouen to do Newcastle United medical today
The goalkeeping department is set to undergo an overhaul this summer.
Aaron Ramsdale is set to return to Southampton at the end of his loan, and John Ruddy has been released. Additionally, Nick Pope is likely to be sold by Newcastle, with Ipswich Town and Leeds United interested in securing his signature.
Dominic Scurr reports that Jaouen is now in Newcastle, with his medical scheduled for later today. If there are no hiccups, his signing is set to be officially completed in the coming hours.
Jaouen delivered a string of magnificent displays for Reims in Ligue 2 and was wanted by some of the biggest clubs in the world.
However, he decided to move to Newcastle United, which is a big boost for Howe as the Magpies desperately need goalkeepers.
Will Jaouen start immediately?
Considering the transfer fee, Jaouen doesn’t look like he is being brought in just to play second fiddle to Pope or anyone else.
However, the fact of the matter is that he is just a 20-year-old with a solitary season of senior football under his belt.
The step up to the Premier League from the second tier of French football is as steep as it can get, so the Magpies need to err on the side of caution with their newest recruit.
The best plan will be to let Jaouen develop and get a handful of games in the cup competitions during his first season, with another experienced goalkeeper joining to take over the reigns as the No 1.
Newcastle United have been linked with a move for James Trafford, who could move on this summer as he is currently the second choice to Gianluigi Donnarumma at Manchester City.
However, the Magpies have already splashed the cash on one goalkeeper, so will they do it again to sign someone more experienced? Time will tell.
