- Newcastle reach agreement with Ewen Jaouen
- 20-year-old goalkeeper already been to Tyneside
- Why Jaouen could signal another goalkeeper signing
Newcastle United have reached an ‘agreement in principle’ with Reims goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen as the Magpies look to strengthen their goalkeeping department this summer, according to Sacha Tavolieri.
The 20-year-old is said to have visited the Newcastle facilities a couple of weeks ago. Jaouen’s agreement works on the basis that he would compete for the number one spot with the Magpies.
A fee of around £17.5m has been quoted. This could suggest Newcastle will be looking to bring more than one goalkeeper to the club this summer as they look to rebuild.

Ewen Jaouen a Newcastle target
This season has marked Jaouen’s first full one in senior football. The Frenchman has managed a rather impressive 15 clean sheets in 34 games for a Reims side that has largely underperformed what was expected of them.
With Aaron Ramsdale’s loan expiring and growing concerns over the ability of Nick Pope going forward, the Magpies are looking to strengthen in between the sticks.
Jaouen is one of the most exciting young goalkeeping prospects in world football. He fits perfectly with Newcastle’s new recruitment focus, which is aimed at bringing in top young talent before the elite come calling.
Jaouen has been linked with the Magpies throughout this season, but the news of an agreement and concrete talks has largely been a surprise to most.
The young French international stands at a massive 6ft 6in and is most commonly deployed as a sweeper-keeper. He excels in his shot-stopping abilities and has remarkably quick reflexes for such a large frame.
Newcastle could sign two goalkeepers
The agreement for Ewen Jaouen would suggest that Newcastle could be in the market for more than one goalkeeping option this summer.
With Jaouen being just 20 years of age with only one proper year of senior experience and not in a top league at that, throwing him into the deep end of the Premier League doesn’t seem like the right move.
And, with Nick Pope also linked away from the club this summer, Jaouen could be joined by a slightly more experienced and Premier League-ready name to be the starter whilst the Frenchman develops.
Other names linked include the likes of James Trafford, whom Newcastle have been interested in for some time now, and veteran goalkeeper David de Gea, who could be a cheap but experienced option from Fiorentina.
