Newcastle United are looking to nip any summer transfer interest in starlet Lewis Miley in the bud amid murmurs of potential suitors in the form of Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea.

The 20-year-old has established himself as a regular in Eddie Howe’s XI on Tyneside this season, despite a campaign ravaged by injuries. The feeling both at Newcastle and across the Premier League is that Miley can go on to become one of the division’s top midfielders.

It’s set to be a big summer of transfer action for the club, who are in a position where they must sell before they buy. Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Tino Livramento could all leave the club and the feeling is that Newcastle may not stand in their way.

However, that does not appear to be the case with Miley. Newcastle continue to regret allowing Elliot Anderson to leave for a meagre £35 million to Nottingham Forest in 2024 and look set to avoid a similar mistake with Miley.

The versatile midfielder, who has regularly filled in at full-back this season, is under contract until 2029 but Football Insider claims that the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United are admirers of the player with those clubs known to be in the market for midfield reinforcements.

The outlet adds that Miley is set to be offered a new contract by the club in order to block any idea of an exit this summer. Those reports are backed up by other outlets including The Sun.

Miley has been a part of the set-up at Newcastle since 2013, working his way up through the academy before making a first team debut in May 2023.

The player has made 34 appearances across all competitions this season but missed a chunk of action in February with a dead leg. Miley then broke his leg in training last week in another setback.

Eddie Howe provides injury update

Speaking about the latest injury, Howe said:  “It was a really innocuous moment training on Tuesday.

“There was no-one around him, no other play involved and he slipped. At that moment we thought maybe a twist, but he was unable to continue and we realised it was more serious than we thought.

“He faces a few months out, we hope he’ll be back in and around pre-season. It’s a real shame because he was playing really well, a real blow for us but also for Lewis. But knowing his strength of character, he’ll be back better than ever.

“It’s been a huge frustration for him. He’s had some really unfortunate moments. This was a slip, there was nothing he could have done about it. We’ve tried to manage his workload, we’re aware of his age and we’ve tried not to overload him too much. Athletically, he is outstanding and his body is strong, but he’s still growing to a degree.”
