Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson scored a late equaliser against his former club Newcastle United to deliver a sizeable blow to Eddie Howe’s European ambitions.

The Magpies have made dropping points from a winning position somewhat of a trademark this season and that was the case once again at the City Ground. Anderson burst through a leggy Magpies back four to cancel out a second-half Harvey Barnes goal.

It’s been an outstanding season for Anderson, who is now set to play a prominent part for England at the World Cup this summer. The 23-year-old is a product of the Magpies academy but was sold to Forest for £35 million in July 2024.

Howe has been outspoken about how he didn’t want to see the player leave St James’ Park but the club chose to cash-in amid pressure to hit financial stipulations. Now valued around the £100 million mark amid talk of a potential summer transfer, it’s been a painful rise for Newcastle fans to watch.

Reacting to the result on Sunday, Anderson told Sky Sports: “Massive point. We knew going into these last few games that it’s important to pick up points and finish on a high. I think it’s a good point considering I don’t think we were at our best today. When that’s the case, it’s about not losing the game.

“I think the subs brought some energy, McAtee had a great assist for me. It was tough out there today in the heat, everyone seemed really tired. A tough first half for both teams but we finished well.”

It’s been a tough few weeks for Anderson, whose mother passed away last month. The player’s celebration for the goal was subdued, not helped by immediate cramp after slotting home.

He said: “It did [feel good to score]. There’s been a few things going on recently. It felt really nice [to score].

“We’ve made a U-turn and done really well, the manager has come in and been brilliant. We are all behind him. It was a tough game midweek but we’ve dusted ourselves down and bounced back in the league.

“The manager said he admires how much we fight for this group. We’ve had four managers and it’s not been easy. We’ve all stuck together and fought for each other.”

In other news, Newcastle United Player Ratings: ‘Colossal’ 8/10 but ‘shaky’ 4 as Nottingham Forest grab point.
