Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler has offered an honest assessment of Yankuba Minteh amid growing scrutiny over his performances, and Newcastle United supporters have been quick to react.

The Gambian winger, who was sold by Newcastle for £30 million last season, remains a talking point as questions persist over his consistency on the south coast. With Brighton rotating their wide players during Saturday’s game, Hürzeler has now addressed the situation publicly.

Meanwhile, Newcastle fans have taken to social media to light-heartedly poke fun at the deal, with many suggesting the club may have made the right call by cashing in last summer – even if Minteh has shone at moments at the AMEX.

Fabian Hürzeler has made it clear that Minteh’s recent omissions from the starting XI are part of a broader tactical approach, rather than a consequence of inconsistent form.

The Brighton boss highlighted the need to carefully manage his wide options, particularly given the intensity of the Premier League. While Minteh remains a player with clear potential, he still has work to do to reach the highest level.

After the defeat to Newcastle, Hürzeler offered his support for the Gambian winger, stating: “I think not always that was successful, but he tried it. Sometimes you have a good day and sometimes a bad day. What you can always show is effort, and that is what he did.”

Despite his potential, the fact he is not a guaranteed starter has raised eyebrows given the size of the transfer fee.

Newcastle United fans joke over £30 million transfer

As Minteh’s situation develops, Newcastle supporters have not held back online. Many have joked that the club pulled off smart business, with the £30 million fee looking increasingly shrewd in hindsight.

Some fans have even compared his current situation at Brighton to expectations during his time as an emerging talent at Newcastle, suggesting the club may have sold him at the perfect moment. While much of the reaction is typical football banter, it could also point to a calculated decision that, for now, appears justified.

One fan wrote: “Minteh looks bang average TBH and that miss was horrendous. Still better than our RW options though.”

Another said: “Minteh is rubbish aswell. I know he normally scores against us but I’m yet to see the justification of a £35mil fee. Had Brightons pants down with that one.”

There is no doubt about Minteh’s potential. Although he never made a senior appearance for Newcastle, the winger showed flashes of brilliance—particularly during his loan spell at Feyenoord—which explains why Brighton were willing to pay such a fee.

However, given his price tag and the level of scrutiny, including from Newcastle fans, Minteh’s performances will continue to be closely monitored as the season draws to a close.
