- Bruno Guimaraes key in Newcastle win
- Addresses injury issues which he suffered in February
- Sets sight on European football next season
Newcastle United have found it extremely tough at times this season; however, they ensured their place in the Premier League next season with a win over Brighton. One of the turning points has been the reintroduction of the Magpies’ captain, Bruno Guimaraes.
The Brazilian has enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career, though an injury on an away trip against Tottenham ruled him out from February until his return against AFC Bournemouth.
He was crucial in the victory over the Seagulls, registering another assist — his fifth of the Premier League season. The 28-year-old is back in black and white, and he couldn’t be happier.
Bruno Guimaraes on injury trouble after Brighton win
It is no mistake that the void left by their captain has been significant, as they have had to ride the tide of a difficult period. Guimaraes is over the moon to return after putting in a strong performance at St James’ Park.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “Amazing, very good after 10 weeks out. First big injury of my career. I am still chasing my best physical level, but today I put in a good performance.”
Before facing Fabian Hurzeler’s men, the Tyneside outfit had lost five matches in a row in all competitions. The club seemed to be engulfed in misery until the weekend.
William Osula scored for a third time in four games before Dan Burn doubled the lead. Jack Hinshelwood struck fear into the Toon Army as he pulled one back with half an hour to go, but the final goal came from Harvey Barnes deep into stoppage time.
The result gives them a fighting chance of returning to European football via the Conference League — something the midfielder has firmly in his sights.
Guimaraes said: “We knew today was important for us, chasing European football for next season. The points are crucial; we keep dreaming and believing.
“We are looking up, not down. We can still play European football next season; we must win the next three games.”
They travel to Elliot Anderson’s Nottingham Forest next weekend, who are themselves embroiled in a European semi-final. If the Brazilian performs at that level again, they have a chance to achieve what once looked impossible.
Guimaraes stepping up for Eddie Howe
When it comes to Guimaraes, it’s not just how he carries himself on the pitch that is important to Eddie Howe’s side, but also how he affects his teammates off it.
In his words after the game, fans can see his true colours. He’s a leader — one of the best around — and he leads by example as well as through his voice.
It cannot be underestimated just how much they missed him over the past few months, which, for many, has been their worst run under the PIF.
If they can rejuvenate themselves and pull off something spectacular at the City Ground, much of the credit will have to go to their midfield maestro.
