- Mason Miley called up to Newcastle United first-team training
- Midfielder is third Miley sibling to progress through Magpies academy
- How Mason could be the future of Newcastle’s midfield
If you are a fan of Newcastle United, you will be well aware of the Miley brothers. Jamie was the first to break into the first-team picture before being moved on to Hartlepool permanently in 2025. Lewis came next and has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most exciting youngsters. But the one you may be less familiar with is 17-year-old Mason Miley.
To many, Mason is thought to be the best of the three brothers, with some suggesting his talent far outweighs that of the rest of his family.
He has been progressing through the academy at a rapid rate and was this week called up to first-team training for the very first time, leading to a media frenzy about just how far he may go.
Who is Mason Miley?
Just like his older siblings, the youngest Miley brother is a midfielder.
Interestingly, his playstyle is very similar to Lewis’s. He has the ability to play both in midfield and in the backline, and possesses a rather imposing physical presence without sacrificing his technical game.
Mason favours a deeper midfield position and has an innate ability to dictate the tempo of a game in a comfortable fashion.
His composure on the ball positions him as a press-resistant, build-up-progressing central force who is very adept at threading forward passes when the opportunity presents itself.
Miley’s technical ability is what appears to set him apart from his brothers, which is particularly impressive given how assured Lewis Miley looks on the ball almost every time he plays.
This season, it has been his defensive contributions that have caught the eye most, with an imperious 21 tackles and 18 interceptions recorded by the start of April.
Newcastle United youngster on verge of first team breakthrough
Mason has always been touted for big things, ever since Jamie began pushing towards a first-team breakthrough.
He has been developing in the Magpies’ academy since the U9 level and has continually shown himself to be a standout prospect. As a result, much of his academy career has seen him play above his age group.
It was in 2024 that the first real murmurings about how good he could be came to the fore, with academy coaches at the time “delighted with how he was progressing” and seeing “a real star in the making.”
He was promoted to the U21 team during the early stages of this season, with coaches vocal about the physical development and footballing maturity they have seen in his game.
His performances have turned heads within the coaching hierarchy, with recognition from Eddie Howe the most recent in a long line of endorsements for the youngster.
Newcastle play Miley roulette
Jamie Miley came through and moved on, and is still playing professional football.
Lewis was next and is continuing to establish himself as a top talent who will keep blossoming in the years to come. He has even attracted reported interest from PSG ahead of this summer’s transfer window.
But should Lewis leave, Newcastle may already have a replacement lined up and ready to take over from his older brother.
Interestingly, there is also a fourth brother involved at a professional club, currently playing at Middlesbrough after moving from Sunderland not too long ago.
He is also said to be a fantastic footballer. Of course, whether he is better than the other three remains to be seen.
But if Newcastle can somehow pry him from Boro’s grasp over the next few years, it would complete the collection of Miley “infinity stones” and could set up yet another first-team breakthrough from a member of the Miley family.
