- Gary Neville sets Manchester United transfer priorities
- Newcastle United star linked
- Red Devils could also swoop for Magpies target
Manchester United legend Gary Neville has urged his former club to pursue a double swoop that could hit Newcastle United hard this summer.
Speaking about realistic transfer targets, Neville suggested that both Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson could be smart additions for the Red Devils as they look to build on their end-of-season form. The comments come at a time when Newcastle are already navigating a crucial period, both on and off the pitch.
Man Utd on ‘red alert’ for Sandro Tonali
The idea of losing Sandro Tonali would represent a major setback for Newcastle. After a difficult start to life in England, the Italian midfielder has proven exactly why the club invested heavily in him.
Technically gifted, composed under pressure, and capable of dictating play, Tonali plays an important role in Eddie Howe’s long-term project. His partnership with Bruno Guimarães has helped transform Newcastle’s midfield, contributing to European qualification and a Carabao Cup triumph.
For Manchester United to target him now would not only test Newcastle’s resolve but also signal their intent to weaken a potential rival. The Sun claims that Michael Carrick’s side are on ‘red alert’ as the player is open to leaving St James’ Park.
Neville said during a Sky Sports fan Q&A: “If you said to me a top centre-half and two good midfield players, that’s what this squad needs right now.
“To be fair, it does need other things after that, but I would say, to me, they dealt with the wide areas.
“They’ve got Amad [Diallo], [Bryan] Mbeumo, [Matheus] Cunha, [Mason] Mount who can play there a little bit, so I’m actually OK with that.
“I think No10s with Mount and Bruno Fernandes, Bruno plays there every week, he’s reliable, so I’d say there’s no problem there.
“It’s two central midfield players and definitely a centre-half, we need a top centre-half.
“Dream world, it would be Marquinhos, [Declan] Rice and [Harry] Kane. Realistic, I’m going Tonali, Anderson and I’m going Konsa.”
Elliot Anderson links hit differently
If a move for Tonali would hurt, any approach for Elliot Anderson would carry an emotional edge for the Newcastle faithful. With hopes of bringing him back to St James’ Park next season, the idea of Anderson being snapped up—especially by a club like Manchester United—would be difficult for both the club and its supporters to accept.
It would feel even more frustrating given Newcastle have finished above the Red Devils in recent seasons prior to this campaign. Losing a homegrown talent to a rival in transition highlights shifting dynamics and changing fortunes.
Newcastle United must stand firm
Neville’s comments may reflect Manchester United’s ambitions, but they also underline how far Newcastle United have come in recent years. Their best players are now attracting attention from traditional “big six” rivals, a sign of their growing status.
The Magpies have to stand firm. They cannot have a repeat of last summer, selling key players and being beaten to top targets. For Eddie Howe and the club, the message is clear – if they are to compete at the highest levels, holding onto talents like Tonali is just as important as signing in their transfer targets.
