- Newcastle United target wanted by Premier League rivals
- Brighton €35 million bid rejected for Said El Mala
- Anthony Gordon’s future is undecided
It comes as no surprise that Newcastle United are looking for a major squad rebuild this summer after an underwhelming campaign. One key area to strengthen is out wide, so recent transfer developments could be encouraging news for the Magpies.
Sky Germany reports that Brighton have had a €35 million bid rejected by Köln for their teenage sensation, Said El Mala. It is understood the Bundesliga side are holding out for a record fee if El Mala is to leave this summer, believed to be in the region of €50 million.
So far this season, the 19-year-old has registered 16 goal contributions in 31 league appearances.
Newcastle United and Aston Villa Villa to step up approach
The Seagulls had two bids rejected in January for the wonderkid, and with the reported asking price, it may now be too steep for Fabian Hürzeler’s side to return with an improved offer.
Speaking to talkSPORT, European football expert Andy Brassell expressed his excitement about the German’s potential, suggesting a move to England could be on the horizon.
He said: “I think when you look at the fact that he’s 19 years old, the potential is clear. He’s got a really high ceiling, and he was a pest again against Leverkusen at the weekend.
“But you know, he’s a guy who takes responsibility in the big moments already.”
Brassell also commented on Anthony Gordon’s situation amid interest from Bayern Munich. The 25-year-old has missed the last two squads against Bournemouth and Arsenal through injury, but some members of the Toon Army believe there may be more to it, with speculation growing that he could be heading for the exit at St James’ Park.
Brassell believes El Mala could be an ideal successor if the English winger were to leave this summer.
He continued: “He’s direct, he’ll score. He’s someone who can play as a winger and as a wide forward, so I think that’s all part of what makes him exciting.
“Clearly, I think he would be an interesting replacement for Anthony Gordon at Newcastle if they were to let him go.”
He also suggested El Mala would be an excellent fit for Unai Emery’s system at Aston Villa, where he could develop even further.
Newcastle manager debacle could hinder transfer progress
While Köln rejected Brighton’s bid, there is another factor that could complicate any potential move: uncertainty over managerial situations.
Brassell noted that “without the guarantee”, El Mala was not fully convinced about a move to the south coast.
A similar situation exists in the North East, where uncertainty continues to surround Eddie Howe’s future, leaving doubts over the long-term direction of the club.
With German giants Borussia Dortmund also showing interest, any potential deal appears increasingly difficult to complete.
El Mala would be a fantastic signing — full of energy and belief — but committing to a project without clarity may prove a step too far at this stage.
In other news, FIFA rule change could benefit Newcastle United but hurt Arsenal and Liverpool.
