- Newcastle United look to sell Yoane Wissa
- Magpies scouting out Saudi Arabia sale
- Club set for huge loss on £55 million outlay
Newcastle United’s 2025 summer transfer window can be described in many ways — one of them being a chaotic mess. It hasn’t panned out how the Magpies would have expected, and one of their recent signings may already be on the chopping block.
Recent updates suggest Yoane Wissa could be pushed out the door this summer, with journalist Sebastien Vidal reporting that the DR Congo international may move to the Saudi Pro League as the club’s owners, PIF, attempt to make a deal happen.
The 29-year-old has made 15 Premier League appearances for the Magpies, scoring just once.
Yoane Wissa endures woeful debut season at Newcastle United
Last summer was filled with speculation over the Brentford striker making a move to the North East, as Alexander Isak no longer appeared keen to represent the club.
When the deal was completed, the Toon Army were pleased to see him arrive, especially after an incredible season for the Bees, in which he scored 19 league goals.
This season, however, he has been a shadow of that player and looks nothing like the man Newcastle spent £55 million on.
What makes matters worse is that his contract had been set to expire this summer, meaning the Magpies could have signed Wissa on a free — instead, they paid £55 million.
Injuries have not helped. Wissa didn’t return to action until December and then missed another two weeks in February, but even so, his performances have been mediocre at best.
A lack of desire, intensity and drive leading the line has seen a structure once built on attacking fluency crumble with Wissa at the forefront.
It may be harsh to place the blame solely on the DR Congo international, but for an experienced Premier League player to drift through a full season with little impact — while being one of the club’s most expensive signings — is a major disappointment.
What began as a summer of optimism about what he could bring, after the loss of a key striker, has turned into frustration and he now looks like another signing set to leave without making a real impact.
Eddie Howe must be questioned over past transfer decisions
Several things have gone wrong for Newcastle this year, and it appears the consequences could cost multiple figures their positions at the club, including manager Eddie Howe.
Howe has made his own mistakes, and not all the blame can be placed on summer signings, but they simply have not delivered the required impact, with Wissa a key example.
Both the striker and the manager may be saying goodbye to the Toon Army in the coming weeks, but the board must be smarter in the transfer market before more damage is done.
Wissa’s time on Tyneside may ultimately be remembered as a “what if” — a player who once thrived in the league but failed to replicate that form in black and white.
