- Sam Allardyce has strong words for Newcastle United legend
- ‘He’s totally out of order’
- Shearer doesn’t believe Howe survives the season
Newcastle United have been poor for several months now, as they find themselves sitting in 14th in the Premier League. The pressure is getting more intense on manager Eddie Howe, with even Alan Shearer claiming he ‘doesn’t see’ him remaining in charge.
Former Premier League manager Sam Allardyce has come to criticise the Magpies legend on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast
He said: “He’s just doing it for his own popularity again with Newcastle fans; he should know better than to do that. He’s totally out of order.”
Sam Allardyce disagrees with Alan Shearer
The Black and Whites’ defeat on the weekend to Bournemouth has been yet another bitter blow to take for a team that is already struggling on the pitch.
The Toon Army are left wondering if there is any way back for their English manager, as not only are performances on the pitch far below expectations, but he’s seemingly lost parts of the dressing room – Anthony Gordon’s transfer debacle seemingly proof of that.
Following the game, Shearer spoke on The Rest is Football podcast about the predicament the manager is facing in his toughest period at the club.
The Magpies hero said: “As I sit here, I don’t see Eddie in charge of Newcastle next season, unfortunately.
“I’m not sure the fight is there. I think it’s a very different club now to the one that he would want to go to.”
Ex Sunderland manager Allardyce was far from pleased and claimed that Shearer was doing it just to fit in with his current role.
Allardyce said: “Mind you, he’s a pundit, and he needs to keep his reputation up, and you need to criticise if you’re a pundit, don’t you?”
Despite that, the ex West Ham and Leeds United man is in slight agreement with the Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer that there is light at the end of the tunnel for Howe.
He added: “Eddie probably knows (that the end of the road) is coming. We all have our life span. Sir Bobby Robson was one of the best, but even he got stick.
“We all get stick if we don’t do well no matter who we are.”
The time for change is now
When the new ownership group came in, they made it clear – they want to make the Tyneside outfit a juggernaut in European football. To do that, you have to win, and at the moment, they are only losing.
There are plenty of mitigating factors which are having a major effect on how the club are performing, which have to be addressed this summer, but one of them is Howe.
Allardyce may feel Shearer’s comments are harsh, but the Geordie has stood in the Englishman’s corner for much of the season, so his comments feel telling.
Allardyce also sees a world where these will be Howe’s final weeks, and looking at it from afar, a change is needed to rejuvenate St James’ Park.
