How much would it cost Newcastle United to sack Eddie Howe?

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe’s job is under a downpour of scrutiny right now, which was further exacerbated by yet another abysmal defeat to Bournemouth at St James’ Park.

Many believe his time is up as Newcastle gaffer, and despite David Hopkinson’s comments around waiting until the summer to make any decisions, the calls for Howe’s head are becoming deafening.

But what would sacking Howe actually cost Newcastle United?

How much to sack Eddie Howe?

In an article written by The Telegraph in 2024, it was stated that terminating Eddie Howe’s position would cost the club around £9m.

Of course, the manager’s remaining contract length has shortened since then, meaning this fee will likely be marginally less than the quoted figure.

Not only that, but the fee will have also been affected by a plethora of internal salary changes, bonuses and staff compensation that may have been juggled around slightly since 2024.

Howe’s current contract reportedly runs until 2027. This means that, with possibly just one year left on his deal, that £9m fee may be even less than we think.

How does the fee compare?

In comparison to some of the fees paid to relieve other Premier League managers of their duties in recent times, the £9 million for Howe rears its head as a very modest sum.

Let’s use Manchester United’s sacking of one Ruben Amorim as an example.

The Portuguese head coach was relieved of his duties at Old Trafford in January of this year, following a public attack on the club hierarchy and how things were being run.

The Red Devils reportedly paid a figure nearing £15.9m to get rid of Amorim, which marked a sum close to £5m more than what they paid to hire him from Sporting.

This makes the fee for Howe as a rather meagre one in the grand scheme of modern football and may be tempting if another name on the market is tickling the owners’ fancy.

Howe on his way out

Howe has been vocal this week about his belief that he is still the best man to take Newcastle forward, despite the run of exceptionally poor results of late. But his cries may prove fruitless, as it does feel like Howe may be fighting for his job in the final six games of the season.

At this point, especially following the defeat today, it has become increasingly difficult to see where the Magpies’ next win is coming from.

Howe may be receiving that £9 million in compensation a lot faster than he may have hoped if the current trajectory continues.
