Anthony Gordon transfer: Newcastle United fans react to ‘outgrown’ claims
  • Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon to push for summer transfer exit
  • England international has not fallen out with St James’ Park chiefs
  • Magpies slap £80 million valuation on winger

Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon is reportedly ‘keen’ to explore the opportunity to leave St James’ Park this summer amid ongoing interest from Premier League rivals.

The 25-year-old joined the Magpies from Everton for £45 million in January 2023 and has gone on to become one of the league’s most dangerous wingers, as well as cementing his place in the senior England side.

Gordon has made 152 appearances for the club, scoring 39 goals and picking up 28 assists. The forward has bagged 10 goals in 12 Champions League outings this season, but netted just six in 26 league matches.

The player is one of many Magpies stars who have been criticised for recent efforts as Eddie Howe’s side struggle to clamber into the top half of the division. The Telegraph now reports that Gordon has told the club that he ‘wants to leave’.

Newcastle United ‘expect’ Anthony Gordon to leave the club

Newcastle are expecting Gordon to seek a move away this summer and are aware of ongoing interest both in England and on the continent. It’s added that the club is ‘braced for bids’ with the winger keen to have his future sorted prior to the World Cup.

The update comes after reports of rampant interest from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich. Those links had come with a £60 million bid suggestion, but that fee is not expected to be enough for the Magpies to green light a sale. More than £80 million is touted as an acceptable fee.

It’s added that Arsenal have a ‘long-standing admiration’ for the former Everton man and that his name regularly crops up in meetings. Liverpool were also known to come close to signing the player in the summer of 2024.

There is not believed to have been a falling out behind the scenes at St James’ Park with the player maintaining a healthy relationship with manager Eddie Howe and chiefs. Gordon is under contract until 2030, giving the Magpies major negotiating power.

It’s fair to say that Newcastle supporters are not too heartbroken by the news of a potentially big payday for the club, given Gordon’s frustrating showings this term. The winger was rated a 4/10 by ReadNewcastle for his performance against Crystal Palace last weekend.

Newcastle fans react to Gordon transfer news

One angered fan didn’t hold back on social media platform X and wrote: “Who gave this kid his ego? He’s been terrible since he got his first England cap and he carries himself around like he’s some boy, he genuinely wouldn’t be a miss.”

Another picked up on the word ‘outgrown’ in reports and noted: “Outgrown? He didn’t score a league goal for a year? …okay man.”

Some Magpies fans took a more measured approach, appreciating why Gordon may want to leave and seek consistent Champions League football. One supporter wrote: “And he has outgrown us especially in the current state we are in.

“Too many fans have took him for granted, slating him all season long whilst being one of our most crucial players by a country mile. Oh well, someone’s getting an absolute superstar in the making.”

Fans will now start thinking about a valuation. Whatever Newcastle bank from the Gordon sale could go to injecting new life into the squad.

One social media user wrote: “If you can genuinely find a club willing to pay anywhere near £80m for Anthony Gordon, snap their hands off.”

The winger has had some memorable moments in black and white, bagging the famously controversial goal against Arsenal in November 2023, as well as being on target in the home victory over PSG in October 2023.

One Magpies fan said: “Feels like a lad who isn’t going to be remembered overly fondly at any club he leaves. Shame, but one that fundamentally will make sense for all parties.”

In other news, Dear Andoni Iraola: Newcastle United is perfect – and so is your ‘exceptional’ Bournemouth star.
