Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has remained committed to the club in the thick of struggles this season, but has been linked with a potential summer transfer exit.

The Brazil international has become one of the highest rated Premier League midfielders since arriving on Tyneside from Lyon in 2022 for £40 million.

In a season where Magpies supporters have vented frustration at the character of several first team members, Guimaraes has regularly earned praise for his full-hearted displays and commitment to the crest.

As great as that’s been for Newcastle fans, it’s the kind of attitude that is also believed to have attracted transfer interest. Manchester United appear to be the suitors with the most serious interest.

The Red Devils are expected to revamp their midfield this summer. Speaking recently, interim boss Michael Carrick said: “I think this summer is going to be a big summer. I think we’ve got to recruit really well.”

That comes after Portuguese outlet UOL claimed that Manchester United had already held talks with the representatives of Guimaraes ahead of a potential swoop. The Magpies man is said to be seen as a long term replacement for Casemiro.

Now, ESPN provides an updated list on players being looked at by chiefs at Old Trafford. Nottingham Forest breakthrough star Elliot Anderson, Crystal Palace man Adam Wharton and Brighton star Carlos Baleba all feature, as well as Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali.

Guimaraes is, unsurprisingly, on that list. However, in a boost for the North East outfit, it’s reported that the player has ‘privately made it clear he won’t force a move away from Newcastle’.

That will be music to the ears of Newcastle fans. The Magpies would likely be able to make a healthy profit on the £40 million splurged three years ago, but it would have to be a huge sum to warrant losing the heartbeat of the team.

It’s not confirmation that the midfielder will certainly stay at Newcastle for the 2026/27 campaign but, ultimately, guarantees that there won’t be another Alexander Isak sized debacle.

Last month, when asked about the rumours, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe was adamant that Guimaraes would not be leaving Tyneside. He said: “I’m not going to be impolite, as this isn’t the forum for that, but for me, it is just a nonsense story.”

Guimaraes will currently be focusing on returning to fitness, having been sidelined with a hamstring injury since the beginning of February. He has been a sore miss for Newcastle.

It had been hoped that the playmaker would be back in action against Crystal Palace following the three-week international break. The player had also been seen in training footage shared by the club.

However, Howe confirmed that Guimaraes would need a little longer to recover. There is an outside chance the captain could feature against Bournemouth on Saturday but the Magpies boss had bookmarked Arsenal as a target date.

In other news, Jose Mourinho has already told Newcastle United stance on Premier League return.
