Newcastle United fans’ reaction to Crystal Palace defeat as ‘no excuses’ message sent

  • Tino Livramento and Sven Botman criticised

Newcastle United fans did not hold back with their anger following a 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Sunday afternoon.

Eddie Howe had been determined to see a response from his side following the painful 2-1 loss to Sunderland at St James’ Park prior to the international break. The Magpies’ character had come under fire in that fixture and little appeared to have changed, despite the time on the training ground.

The meeting with the Eagles was lacklustre from the start but Newcastle appeared to be on their way to three points thanks to a messy William Osula strike in the first half. Howe’s side went into the final 10 minutes with the score at 1-0.

However, buoyed by a goal in midweek, Jean-Philippe Mateta came off the bench to capitalise on sloppy Magpies defending and bag a brace. Delivering a sizeable blow to Newcastle’s European ambitions.

Eddie Howe criticised by Newcastle United fans

For many fans, it was deemed that Howe should be the one to blame. Taking to social media platform X, one user wrote: “I’ve watched almost every match this season. This isn’t individual errors or bad luck.

“It’s tactics — and a complete lack of tactical adaptability from Eddie Howe. We don’t look like scoring.
We have no idea how to score.”

Often, fingers are pointed to Howe’s decisions in the transfer window. In particular, the club has struggled to replace Alexander Isak.

One Newcastle fan wrote: “The fact that Howe still hasn’t solved the Isak void since pre-season, despite spending millions, is reason enough for him to go.”

Tino Livramento and Sven Botman make errors at Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace made the most of mistakes from Tino Livramento and Sven Botman late on. The full-back awfully mistimed a header to help gift the Eagles space for the leveller with Botman giving away a silly penalty in injury time.

One X user said: “No excuses for Livramento and Botman today, two individual errors costing us. But f**** me if that’s a penalty you’re giving ten a game every game. I don’t think anyone actually knows the rules these days because they’re applied randomly.”

Another wrote: “Botman should be made to walk home after that. Absolute amateur stuff. Tino on the 1st goal as well. Brutal stuff.”

It was hard to pick out standout performances at Selhurst Park but Lewis Hall did earn praise for a brave showing at full-back. The England international didn’t hesitate to throw his body in front of Daniel Munoz on two occasions.

Reacting to one of those blocks, a Newcastle fan wrote: “Lewis Hall incredibly brave there. He knew he was going to get absolutely obliterated. And he was.”

Another found praise for Lewis Miley, who picked up the assist. They said: “Miley is playing well after coming back from a bad injury & Hall too.”
