  • Shola Ameobi to leave Newcastle United loan manager role
  • Ameobi will continue at the club in ambassadorial position
  • Why the next appointment must do better

Newcastle United legend and current loan manager Shola Ameobi is set to leave his role at the end of the season, according to a report by Mark Douglas.

Ameobi has held the position since 2019, overseeing a number of loan moves for the club’s young talents.

The club is planning to shift its recruitment focus during this summer’s transfer window, and the move is believed to be a strategic one.

Newcastle United loan manager to leave role

Despite stepping away from his current position, Ameobi is not expected to leave the club entirely.

Instead, he is set to move into an “expanded ambassadorial role”, which is viewed as a natural evolution of the former striker’s position at Newcastle.

The former forward remains highly regarded at the club, and the change is expected to allow his leadership qualities to be utilised across a wider range of operations.

Ameobi’s new role is set to involve greater work with commercial and civic partners. His experience and deep connection to the club are seen as valuable assets in building relationships with new stakeholders.

Why is Shola Ameobi leaving the role?

Ameobi’s departure from the football department is believed to be a mutual decision, with sporting director Ross Wilson keen to reassess the club’s approach to academy development moving forward.

Loan moves are viewed as a crucial pathway for giving young players senior experience, particularly with Newcastle planning to expand their recruitment of emerging talent.

Managing such a large group of young prospects within one squad is almost impossible, and unsuccessful loan spells for players such as Antonio Cordero and Trevan Sanusi have raised concerns.

The right time for change

Few Newcastle supporters would argue that Ameobi’s spell as loan manager has been overwhelmingly successful, particularly over the last couple of years.

There have been very few loan moves that can genuinely be considered major successes. Of course, players must also take responsibility when opportunities fail to work out, but the club’s overall handling of development pathways has faced criticism.

Players such as Garang Kuol saw their progress stall following decisions made by the club’s development staff. For some time, there has been a growing sense that change was needed.

An expansion of Newcastle’s scouting department is already underway, and several promising young talents have arrived, including Ecuadorian prospect Johan Martinez from Independiente del Valle.

With that in mind, and given the mixed record of recent loan spells, Newcastle appear to believe this is the right moment to restructure the department.

Whoever is appointed to replace Ameobi will need to be carefully selected. If Newcastle are serious about improving their academy pathway, getting the next appointment right will be essential.

Peter Ramage expected to remain

It is important to note that Ameobi was not solely responsible for deciding where players were sent on loan.

Part of his role involved acting as a liaison for the club’s young talents while away from Tyneside, with decisions over destinations shared alongside Peter Ramage.

While Ameobi’s role is changing, Ramage is expected to remain heavily involved in Newcastle’s player development structure. Although he is not currently believed to be a contender for the loan manager position, some supporters may still have concerns given the struggles of recent years.

If Newcastle are serious about improving the quality of loan moves for their young players, there is a strong argument that broader changes may still be required behind the scenes.ly heavily involved would have served the Magpies better.
