Joe Willock’s performance in Newcastle United’s 1-0 win over Chelsea hasn’t gone unnoticed by fans. The English midfielder was handed just his eighth league start of the season.
The Magpies’ only victory at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League came way back in 2012, courtesy of a Papiss Cisse masterclass. Many expected Eddie Howe to have one eye on the Barcelona game next Wednesday.
Howe started a second-string midfield, with Willock joined by Jacob Ramsey and Nick Woltemade in the middle of the park. They came up against one of the top-flight’s most highly rated midfields and flourished.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle: Willock works his magic
Willock was particularly impressive, putting in a sensational performance which helped Newcastle to victory. He assisted Anthony Gordon for the winner in the 18th minute, drawing Robert Sanchez out of his goal before passing to the English winger for a tap-in.
The 26-year-old hasn’t enjoyed the best of seasons and was disgracefully racially abused after a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace in January. He reminded fans of his ability this evening, a workhorse who pulled the strings in the middle of the park.

Willock came off in the 77th minute after picking up a knock, which will be a concern for Howe. He will be without captain Bruno Guimaraes for the trip to Barca in the Champions League next week.
Sandro Tonali missed today’s win over Chelsea due to illness, and it’s not guaranteed that the Italian will be back in time for the Camp Nou clash. If he isn’t available, Willock could be the one whom Howe turns to alongside Joelinton and Ramsey.
Fans applaud Willock
It’s been a tough season for Willock, whose future has been the subject of speculation. The former Arsenal man has been linked with Crystal Palace amid a lack of game time.
If the English midfielder puts in displays like the one at Stamford Bridge, Howe will be eager to keep hold of him. He’s now made 33 appearances across competitions, posting one goal and two assists.
Willock came in for huge praise from fans on X. One supporter applauded him and his upturn in form as of late:
“Ramsey is starting to get the credit but Willock deserves massive credit for how he’s performed over the last few months as well.”
Another hailed the Magpies man and Gordon:
“Gordon with the winner, Willock immense. Disciplined and resilient performance all night.First win at Stamford Bridge in 14 years. A real statement before Barca.”
One fan felt as though the old Willock was back:
“Joe Willock looked like loanee Joe Willock. Maybe the healthiest he’s been since then!”
Another added:
“Take a bow, brilliant effort. Gordon and Willock outstanding.”
This was echoed:
“Joe Willock doing the Lord’s work at Stamford Bridge.”
One supporter alluded to the grief Willock has been given:
“Willock needs a good mention after the (crap) he has taken. I thought he was our best output in attack as he always found the space. All good attacks came through him today.”
Newcastle’s win over Chelsea was the perfect preparation for the Barca game, with the Champions League last 16 tie level at 1-1 on aggregate. If Willock is available, he might just be knocking on Howe’s door regarding a start in Catalonia.
