- His importance within the Magpies’ team
Players and fans of Newcastle United will be pleased to see Bruno Guimaraes travel with the squad to the Camp Nou. Although the Brazilian midfielder isn’t expected to be fit to face Barcelona, he will travel to Spain to support his teammates.
Guimaraes has been out of action for over a month with a hamstring injury following the Magpies’ 2-1 win against Spurs. He sat out the 1-1 draw against the Catalans in the first leg at St James’ Park midweek.
Eddie Howe gave an update on the Brazilian’s recovery ahead of the Chelsea game. He said (via Newcastle World:
“I think his plan, typical Bruno, is to come to Barcelona and support the team. He’s such a big player.”
The English manager continued.
“I’d love to think by the time the international break has ended, he’ll be back, fit and available.”
Howe’s Injury Issues
The Toon Army will be delighted to hear that their captain isn’t too far away from returning to the pitch at St James’ Park, with several injuries affecting Howe throughout the season. Up until his injury, the 28-year-old had been a consistent starter for the Magpies across the Premier League.
Lewis Miley has also been out injured with a dead leg for over a month as he fights his way to fitness, which could see him return next week. Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth are currently ruled out due to injuries, while Yoane Wissa, Joelinton, Tino Livramento and Harvey Barnes have all faced problems in recent months.
Newcastle will have to win in Spain if Guimaraes is going to represent the club again in Europe this season. But if they don’t, supporters will be hoping he can spearhead their team to a successful end to the season.
A True Captain
Since the Brazilian’s arrival from Lyon in 2022, he has quickly become a fan favourite in Tyneside due to his passion for Newcastle. His performances have led his side to some historic performances, including the Carabao Cup final in 2025, as he went on to lift Newcastle’s first major domestic trophy since the 1950s.
While Newcastle have faced adversity this season, it’s been through no fault of Guimaraes, who has delivered his best goalscoring season in the Premier League to date, with nine goals in 23 league appearances.
He has quickly become one of the Premier League’s most influential players since joining the club, and gets into many joint XI’s.
ESPN reports that Guimaraes could leave the Northeast this summer to join Manchester United, alongside his teammate Sandro Tonali. However, Newcastle supporters will be hoping the Brazilian has the club in his heart as they look to him to help inspire the team with his world-class performances.
Newcastle face Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby just before the international break, meaning Guimaraes’ potential return could come away at Crystal Palace on April 11th.
