Anthony Gordon made Newcastle United history last night in Azerbaijan, overtaking club legend Alan Shearer’s Champions League goalscoring record.
Newcastle United began their first-ever Champions League knockout stage clash with intent, smashing five goals past Qarabag before the break.
The hosts were left shell-shocked after just 2 minutes, as Anthony Gordon scored the first of his four goals with a calm finish past Mateusz Kochalski.
Record breaker Gordon surpasses Alan Shearer
It was a memorable evening for the Liverpool-born forward, netting a hat-trick in just 33 minutes, becoming the fastest Englishman to do so in the Champions League.
“He was really good in that first half. He started the press, a number of his goals came from his attitude off the ball.”
“He could have had more, but a very good display,” Newcastle Manager Eddie Howe said.
Gordon’s four-goal haul took his tally to ten in this season’s competition, breaking club legend Alan Shearer’s Champions League record of six goals in a single season for The Magpies.
A memorable evening for Gordon saw him bag a hat-trick of records, with his opener becoming Newcastle’s quickest Champions League goal ever, after just 122 seconds.
