Former Premier League striker Kevin Campbell has suggested that Eddie Howe may start Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson alongside one another.
Wilson has been absent ever since Newcastle United’s thrilling 3-3 draw with Manchester City, in which he scored the second goal, but during his time on the shelf £63m record summer signing Isak has enjoyed a fast start to life on Tyneside.
The Swedish striker scored on his debut at Anfield and perhaps should have found the net against Crystal Palace last weekend.
Speaking on the Premier FPL injuries YouTube channel, injury expert Ben Dinnery claimed that Wilson could be out until after the international break and upon his return, Campbell feels the Englishman could be reinstated to the side but not at the expense of Isak.
He said to Football Insider when asked how Wilson could play when fit: “They might just play both and tinker with the system a little bit.
“They’ve got enough players to change the system if they so need to. Can you imagine Isak and Wilson up top? They’d be a handful for anybody.
“The key is Wilson keeping fit. That’s the issue Newcastle have. Him coming in for four or five games and then pulling up with a muscle injury or whatever is going to be difficult.
“Maybe they might bring him back slowly while Isak plays. Get him in there whenever needs be. Bring him on late on in games or with 20 minutes to go to see how they might do together.
“That might be the way forward. If they can click together, those two will be a handful.”
The traditional style of deploying two strikers has definitely faded in recent years and considering Wilson’s injury problems, it perhaps wouldn’t be wise to flip the script and then have to revert to previous methods when he pulls up, as Campbell alluded to.
Wilson missed 23 games through injury last term and perhaps he will become the second choice behind Isak but certainly, the option of subbing the 30-year-old in to partner Isak would be a tremendous possibility for Eddie Howe.
