Journalists say ‘great’ Guimaraes was ‘intense’ v Arsenal

Newcastle United pulled off an impressive 2-0 win over Arsenal on Monday and Bruno Guimaraes was one of many players who impressed. The 24-year-old started alongside Sean Longstaff and Joelinton in midfield and was outstanding at St James’ Park.

Only one Newcastle player whipped in more crosses, only one player had more accurate long-range passes, only one player made more tackles and only one player made more interceptions. No Newcastle player created more chances, made more touches, completed more passes or won more freekicks than the Brazilian international, however.

Guimaraes even got on the scoresheet, wrapping up the game in the 85th minute with a close-range finish after latching onto a rebounded effort. Lee Ryder of Chronicle Live gave the 24-year-old a player rating of 9/10 and said he ‘ran the show’.

Dominic Scurr of Shields Gazette gave Guimaraes a player rating of 9/10 and said he was brilliant at turning over possession while having excellent distribution at St James’ Park. Jude Summerfield of 90min gave the Brazilian a player rating of 9/10 and said he was ‘great’ in possession and ‘intense’ when defending.

Against Arsenal, Guimaraes played for 90 minutes, had 73 touches, won one aerial duel, completed 81.6% of his 49 passes, created two chances, had two shots with 50% hitting the target, whipped in three crosses with 33% finding a teammate, played four accurate long-range balls, made three tackles, had two clearances, made one interception, blocked one shot, had one successful dribble and won three freekicks.
