Paddy Kenny says Toney would be a ‘cracking signing’

Newcastle United are expected to sign a striker this summer as they’re currently 13th in the Premier League for goals and don’t have a player with more than six league goals this season, but it remains to be seen who they’ll sign.

One player the Magpies have been linked with is former player Ivan Toney who is currently at Brentford. Paddy Kenny says he’d be a ‘cracking signing’ because he’s ‘proven at this level’ after a prolific Premier League campaign.

The 26-year-old has scored 12 goals with four assists in 29 league games this season, twice as many as Callum Wilson, so Toney would improve the Newcastle squad. The Bees will reportedly grant him a departure for £30m this summer, so Toney could be coming back to the North-East.

Kenny says the Magpies should go for it, telling Football Insider: “Toney is proven at this level, that’s for sure. He also doesn’t have any injury issues which is what has blighted Callum Wilson. I think he’s only going to get better as well. He will get more chances at Newcastle so, to me, that’s more goals.

“Newcastle want to be up there, challenging for Europe. Is Toney the man to score the goals to get them there? Maybe he is, I think he could do that. That’s what they are looking for, it’s the next level in their development. It would be a cracking signing in my opinion.”

Toney has spent two years at Brentford after joining from Peterborough, making 85 appearances in all competitions, scoring 47 goals with 15 assists. With Chris Wood struggling for goals and Dwight Gayle being out of favour, Toney would be a good addition.
