Journalists praise ‘valiant’ Schar despite 1-0 defeat

Newcastle United suffered a 1-0 defeat to Everton on Thursday evening, but Fabian Schar wasn’t an underperformer on the night. The 30-year-old started alongside Dan Burn at centre-back and played his part in limiting Everton to only three shots on target in their own backyard.

Richarlison didn’t have one opportunity before being substituted late on and Schar was praised by a number of journalists for stifling the Toffees until the dying minutes of the game.

Jordan Cronin of Newcastle World gave Schar a player rating of 6/10. Gareth Cox of The National News gave the Swiss international a player rating of 7/10 and said he ‘marshalled the team well’. Lee Ryder of Chronicle Live gave Schar a player rating of 8/10 and said he produced some ‘valiant defending’. Tom Gott of 90min gave him a player rating of 7/10 and noted how he ‘kept Everton’s forwards quiet’.

Against the Toffees, Schar played for 90 minutes, had 78 touches, won one aerial duel, completed 70.6% of his 68 passes, had three shots with 33% hitting the target, whipped in one cross, found a teammate with 10 long balls from deep, made one tackle, gave away two fouls and made one interception.

Though the 30-year-old was on the losing team in midweek, he’s been impressive of late. Schar has made 19 Premier League appearances this season and is playing at his best right now.

In other news, the writing is on the wall for Federico Fernandez at Newcastle United

matchday.
