Fans on social media blast ‘awful’ Jonjo Shelvey for ‘terrible’ performance

Newcastle United drew 1-1 with Watford on Saturday after conceding a late equaliser and Jonjo Shelvey was one of many players to underperform, scoring a player rating of 5/10 by Chronicle Live.

The 29-year-old saw a lot of the ball and occasionally distributed well in possession, but he was the only Newcastle midfielder not to make a tackle or create a chance over the 90 minutes.

Shelvey has been a regular under Eddie Howe without his performances justifying the continued selection, so fans on social media believe it’s time he was replaced.

Against Watford, the England international had 59 touches, failed to win an aerial duel, completed 78.9% of his 52 passes, failed to create a chance, had two shots without hitting the target, found a teammate with eight of his 17 long-range passes, failed to make a tackle, had two interceptions, made one clearance, gave away two fouls, picked up a booking and had one successful dribble.

Shelvey has made 13 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring one goal. Howe isn’t blessed with a lot of depth in midfield as Jeff Hendrick is surplus to requirements, Isaac Hayden is injured and Joe Willock is still building up his fitness. Fans hope a midfielder is signed before the January transfer window shuts.

In other news, fans on social media say ‘brilliant’ Kieran Trippier is ‘a class above’

matchday.
