Gabby Agbonlahor says Allan Saint-Maximin will be ‘unhappy’ by recent change

It’s been 11 days since Steve Bruce left Newcastle United and Gabby Agbonlahor believes Allan Saint-Maximin will still be “unhappy” having lost the manager who brought him to England.

The 24-year-old was one of the first signings Bruce made after being appointed manager in 2019, so the sacking did affect him negatively. Saint-Maximin posted a statement thanking Bruce for the time they had together and Agbonlahor explained why he might be hurting.

He told Football Insider: “Whenever a manager leaves there’s always those going to be players who are sad and those that are happy. It depends on how much football you played under him.

“Players who he brought to the club and played under him will be unhappy, the likes of Saint-Maximin. You can tell by which players come out on their social media to recognise what the manager has done for them.”

Saint-Maximin joined Newcastle from OGC Nice two years ago and has gone on to make 67 appearances in all competitions, scoring nine goals with 14 assists. This season, he’s hand a hand in five goals from 11 games across the board, but things have dried up of late.

The uncapped Frenchman hasn’t scored in his last five league games and hasn’t made an assist in his previous four. Saint-Maximin wasn’t at his best in Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea either, failing to register a shot on target or create a chance, so he needs not to dwell on Bruce’s departure.
