Fans on social media aren’t excited by Newcastle’s interest in Mesut Ozil

Newcastle United are set for relegation as things stand as they sit 19th in the Premier League table, but the Magpies are now the richest club in Europe after their takeover by Public Investment Fund (PIF), PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media, so significant investment in January could see them turn things around.

United have been linked with a host of players as they now boast lucrative resources to bolster their squad, but it remains to be seen who they’ll end up signing from the dozens mentioned in reports. Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley was recently named as a transfer target, but Ekrem Konur says former Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil is now on their shortlist.

Fans on social media aren’t too excited by the news, likely because he’s not commanding a starting place at Fenerbahce and isn’t getting among the goals. The 33-year-old joined Fener from Arsenal in January and has gone on to make 21 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals with two assists.

Ozil takes home £350k-per-week in Turkey, though Arsenal are still footing 90% of the bill after his departure, so does the German international really present value for money?
