Fabian Schar was on the bench against Watford and posted birthday message to brother

Fabian Schar was an unused substitute as Newcastle United played out a 1-1 draw with Watford on Saturday. The 29-year-old was left on the bench as Steve Bruce named Federico Fernandez alongside Ciaran Clark at centre-back, but he cheered himself up wishing his brother a happy birthday on Instagram – Schar’s brother turned 30 while Fabian is 29 until mid-to-late December.

Schar was once one of the first names on the teamsheet at Newcastle, but he’s made only two Premier League appearances this season and has spent more time among the substitutes than on the pitch. Nevertheless, Schar would have enjoyed Newcastle avoiding defeat and picking up another point on the weekend.

The Swiss international joined Newcastle from Deportivo La Coruna in 2018 and has gone on to make 76 appearances in all competitions, scoring seven goals with one assist. Schar played 19 times for the Magpies last season, only missing games due to injury woes. He now has a task to get back into the side, however.

Newcastle next face Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on Saturday.
