Paul Dummett had an uncertain future at Newcastle United as his contract was up this summer, but the Magpies confirmed on Wednesday they’ve triggered a 12-month extension for the 29-year-old who celebrated the news with a post on Instagram.

Dummett rose through the youth ranks to Newcastle first-team in 2012/13 and has gone on to make 201 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals with one assist. He’s struggled with injuries in the last two seasons, impacting his playing time, which is why his future was up in the air this summer.

The left-back made 17 appearances from a possible 45 in 2019/20 due to an achilles tendon rupture and made 16 appearances from a possible 43 in 2020/21 as he spent the first half of the season recovering. Dummett was a regular in the starting lineup upon his return and did enough to earn a one year extension, so he’ll hope to keep his place in 2021/22.

His Instagram post was liked by more than 1600 people and there were dozens of positive comments from fans, friends and family. It’s clear he’s a popular player.
