Pessimism on social media as Newcastle face competition for Lemina

Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Mario Lemina, but the transfer updates that followed pour cold water on the prospect of them signing him, so there’s a lot of pessimism on social media whenever this story is brought up.

In June, the Daily Mail reported that Mike Ashley refused to pay £4m for Lemina as he was 27 years of age and not worth investing in. And Di Marzio reported more recently that Cagliari are battling Newcastle for his signature, so it remains to be seen if the Magpies are even contenders anymore.

Lemina joined Southampton from Juventus in 2017 and has gone on to make 52 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals with two assists. The Gabon international is surplus to requirements, however, as he fell down the pecking order and has been loaned out for the last two seasons.

Lemina made 28 appearances for Galatasaray (September 2019 – August 2020) and 30 appearances for Fulham (August 2020 – May 2021) before returning to Southampton this summer, but it doesn’t appear he has a future at St Marys. It doesn’t appear his future will be at St James’ either though.
