Newcastle United have begun their pre-season ahead of the 2021/22 campaign and Jamaal Lascelles was one of many players returning to the training ground. The 27-year-old marked the occasion with a snap on his Instagram story that the official club account had posted earlier.

Lascelles joined the Magpies from Nottingham Forest in 2014 and has gone on to make 187 appearances in all competitions, scoring 12 goals with four assists. The uncapped Englishman has been a regular at St James’ Park for six seasons and is now club captain, so he’s an important player.

It wouldn’t have been a full compliment of players at Darsley Park, however, as many would have been travelling back from or still playing in international tournaments. The Newcastle players that have taken part in the 2020 European Championships or Copa America may be given a break before coming back.

The Toon Army’s first Premier League game is on August 15, so they have five-and-a-half weeks to prepare. It’s unlikely the starting XI Steve Bruce names against West Ham United will be the side they continue with for most of the season, however.
