Newcastle fans react to missing out on Ozan Kabak

Many Newcastle United fans have been reacting to a report from BBC Sport’s Ian Dennis on Twitter that the Magpies had agreed a deal with Bundesliga side Schalke 04 for Ozan Kabak before they were blown out of the water by Liverpool.

The Magpies spent deadline day trying to sort out a couple of potential loan deals to strengthen the squad, but in the end they were only able to secure the loan addition of Arsenal’s Joe Willock. That came after a move for Hamza Choudhury failed to materialise and means that Steve Bruce was unable to add as many options to his squad as he would have hoped.

Newcastle had been in the market for defensive reinforcements throughout the window, with the likes of Brandon Williams having been linked, only to remain at Manchester United. This update from Dennis suggests that the Magpies made a move for Kabak, with an agreement having even been reached for the 20-year-old to make the move to St James’ Park.

However, the journalist added that Liverpool came in with an offer which includes the option to buy at the end of the season for £18m. That is the sort of bid the Magpies would have been unable to match, while the pull of the champions was likely to be too strong for Kabak to ignore.

Many Newcastle fans were frustrated to have missed out on a rising talent who has ended up at the Premier League champions. Others questioned why the Magpies were even in for a centre-back when they have Florian Lejeune out on loan with Alaves in La Liga.
