Newcastle fans want Sheffield Wednesday to take Steve Bruce back after Garry Monk sacking

A number of Newcastle United fans have urged Sheffield Wednesday to bring Steve Bruce back to Hillsborough following the Championship club’s decision to sack Garry Monk.

Bruce spent the second half of the 2018/19 season in charge of Sheffield Wednesday after being appointed manager in January 2019 and he guided the Owls to a 12th-placed finish in the Championship. That summer, he decided to resign amid interest from Newcastle following the departure of Rafa Benitez.

The Magpies named Bruce as manager a few days later and he led the club to mid-table safety in his first season in charge last term. However, despite having invested in the likes of Callum Wilson, Allan Saint-Maximin, Joelinton and Ryan Fraser, the Magpies have still come under scrutiny for their negative approach to matches.

Under Bruce last season, Newcastle recorded the fifth-fewest attempts on goal in the top flight, whilst also making more passes than just one other team (premierleague.com). That has not imprvoed despite spending £35m in the summer, with the Magpies having registered the fewest shots on goal in the current Premier League campaign.

Many Newcastle fans were suggesting that Bruce could be an ideal candidate to take over from Monk at Sheffield Wednesday, and whilst these comments were made in jest, it highlights the growing dissatisfaction between the supporters and manager at St James’ Park:
