Several Newcastle fans have reacted strongly to a tweet from Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, who suggested that Joelinton and Salomon Rondon would have made a good partnership for the Magpies.
Downie’s tweet was in response to Chronicle Live’s Mark Douglas, who had been praising an exclusive interview with Rondon by The Athletic reporter George Caulkin.
In the interview, Venezuela international Rondon, who scored 11 goals in 32 Premier League games for the Magpies while on loan from West Brom last season, revealed that he would have loved to have re-signed with Newcastle, saying:
It’s about decisions and it wasn’t my decision.
If Newcastle had offered me a deal, if they’d said ‘Do you want to stay here?’, then of course I would have stayed.
Instead of signing Rondon permanently, the Magpies chose to sign Joelinton from Hoffenheim to be their main striker this season.
However, the £40million Brazilian has not looked suited to the position, scoring just once in 26 league games.
Following Downie’s tweet, that claimed a potential Rondon and Joelinton parternship could be “a real problem for any defence”, a number of Newcastle fans took to Twitter to disagree with the journalist.
