Newcastle set Sels asking price

Newcastle United have set their price for transfer listed Matz Sels at £4.5million, according to reports in Belgium.

We reported yesterday that Newcastle were looking to offload goalkeeper Sels this summer, with the club having a preference on selling to an English club if possible.

Now Belgian outlet La DH are reporting that the Magpies want around £4.5million for the 26-year old, who is currently on loan with Anderlecht.

The Belgian champions want to sign Sels on a permanent deal, but they will not be able to afford United’s asking price, which is just £2million lower than the £6.5million they paid for him almost two years ago.

Since signing from Gent in 2016, Sels struggled to adapt to English football, and was quickly dropped by Rafa Benitez in the Championship, with the Spaniard preferring Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot in goal for the Magpies.

Now, with Darlow and Elliot still at the club, and with the January loan addition of Martin Dubravka who is expected to join permanently in the summer, Sels is now surplus to requirements.

Furthermore, Benitez is expected to try and bring in another senior goalkeeper as well, placing in doubt Darlow and Elliot’s futures on Tyneside, never mind that of Sels.

matchday.
