Newcastle want to sell Sels to an English club in the summer

Newcastle United are looking to sell goalkeeper Matz Sels in the summer, and would prefer to sell to an English club, according to Belgian outlet La Derniere Heure.

The Magpies paid £5million to sign the highly rated ‘keeper from Gent in 2016, but he failed to establish himself in the Championship, failing to take the Number 1 spot from Karl Darlow or supplant Rob Elliot as back-up.

In a handful of appearances, Sels made mistakes and failed to deal with the physicality needed to play in England, and so was loaned out to Anderlecht last summer.

Having played for the Belgian champions regularly this season, La DH claim that while Anderlecht are keen to keep the goalkeeper, Newcastle would rather sell him to an English club.

Due to the money in English football, Newcastle are more likely to recoup a large chunk of the money they paid for Sels almost two years ago if they sell him to another side in England, although it may take some convincing.

Sels has been less than impressive in England and would hardly be a top target for anyone who bore witness to his performances with the Magpies last season.

Anderlecht may not be able to sign Sels permanently, but another loan move could work for all parties if Newcastle can’t find a buyer this summer.

matchday.
