Yet more problems are being shoved in the face of Newcastle United should Rafael Benitez’s side get relegated from the Premier League into the Championship, as per a report in The Telegraph.
The Magpies are now facing the prospect of having to pay England midfielder Jonjo Shelvey £80,000-a-week, even if they get relegated.
Newcastle boss Benitez has already hinted to the club’s owner Mike Ashley that a massive re-think of the financial system needs to be carried out, but there’s no hiding from the fact that Newcastle will be in massive money trouble if they fail to beat the dreaded drop.

It was only in January when Shelvey signed a long-term deal (five-and-a-half years) at St James’ Park as he completed a switch from fellow Premier League side Swansea City.
However, he doesn’t have a clause in his contract to state that his wages would lower should Newcastle go down.
Given the fact that Shelvey has now found regular first-team football since making the transfer, added to his large salary, he is probably in no hurry to depart St James’ whether or not Newcastle go down.
