Newcastle United winger Andros Townsend could leave the club for as little as £8million, according to reports in The Mirror.
The £12million January signing reportedly had a clause written into his contract stating that, should the club be relegated, he could leave for £8million.
The report is quick to claim that the former Spurs and England winger has no intention of pushing for a move should the Toon be relegated. However, a player of Townsend’s quality, who’s likely to attract interest from mid-table Premier League sides, could easily command the fee.
Newcastle’s other new English recruit, Jonjo Shelvey, has also stated to friends that he has no intention of leaving St James’ Park should the worst happen.
Both players are full England internationals and joined relegation threatened Newcastle for fees believed to be around £12million. Townsend has ten England caps to his name, whilst Shelvey has six.
Neither look like having much of a chance of going to the European Championships this summer with this Newcastle side’s level of performance.
