It has been widely reported Newcastle United are desperate for a winger. Andros Townsend seems to be the most likely signing for the Magpies, however Daniel Levy’s insistence on a fee of £14-million seems to have put Newcastle off the transfer.
The Telegraph have reported that Levy will not allow Townsend to go out on loan, whilst Newcastle United will not meet the asking price. Townsend’s inclusion in last night’s U-21 game showed just how far away a deal is.
Therefore, Steve McClaren is looking towards Queens Park Rangers winger Matt Phillips. Newcastle would have to battle with Watford and West Brom for the £5-million rated man. The fee is thought to be low as QPR attempt to raise cash for their own push for promotion.
Townsend is said to be worried that the cut-price Phillips would be a more attractive deal to the Toon than his own £14-million asking price. Townsend hasn’t played a full 90 minutes for Spurs since January 21st.
