Former striker ‘open to return’

Former Newcastle United favourite Obafemi Martins has left the door open for a sensational return. The Nigerian featured 88 times for the Toon, scoring 28 goals between 2006 and 2009. The striker initially signed for €15-million, taking the hallowed number nine shirt.

Martins told BBC Sport

I love the English Premier League and you never know what can happen in football

I don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow but I will never say never when it comes to going back to England.

When I left Newcastle, I never forgot all about England and when the chance to return with Birmingham City on loan came, I took it.

I enjoyed some amazing times in England and I will never close the door on a possible return.

Martins begins pre-season training with the Sounders on the twenty-second of January, whilst the English transfer window closes on the second of February.

Aston Villa did have an approach for the player accepted however Martins rejected the chance to rejoin the rock bottom club.

The 31-year old has featured 41 times for Nigeria, scoring 18 times. The striker’s form at Seattle has aided his international cause, returning to The Super Eagles side following a two year absence.
