Newcastle United remain in the bottom three after suffering their third successive, cruel 1-0 defeat – this time at the hands of league leaders Arsenal.
The Magpies dominated for the most part and had the best chances of the game, but were made to rue their missed chances after Laurent Koscielny broke the deadlock on 72 minutes.
Though Newcastle fought back after conceding to create several chances, they lacked the killer instinct in front of goal to beat Petr Cech.
The fans, once again, took to Twitter to voice their concerns over the club’s current striking options and the need for improvement in the January window.
Twitter: Well played #NUFC unfortunate to lose that, but with the chances we had, you have to score them or you get punished! @NUFC360 @ReadNewcastle (@davez2010)
Twitter: RT @DavidJWhetstone: And #nufc lose again. No points for effort, good saves or nearly not losing when everyone says you will. You don’t sco… (@NUFC_Index)
Twitter: If you’re still unsure why #NUFC are prioritising signing a striker in January, rewatch that match (@DeludedMag)
Twitter: It’s now 322 minutes since #NUFC last put the ball in the net.
Considering the chances we’ve carved out, that’s appalling! (@NUFC_Index)
Some fans even felt today’s performance has secured the club’s fate:
Twitter: We are relegated, and not coming back. https://t.co/IsnLhGjI0Z (@jackelliottdean)
Twitter: Mark of champion teams: Play bad, still win. Mark of relegated teams: Play well, still lose.
Then you watch the #afc vs #nufc game. (@nufctoonarmy)
However, there were some fans who remained optimistic:
Twitter: @jackelliottdean @ReadNewcastle Far from it. We gave one of the top teams in the league a run for their money. I think we’ll stay up, just (@ThinWhiteMale)
Twitter: Keep Tiote fit and we’ll stay up. #nufc (@Dave_is_Elvis)
So, who would the fans like to see signed in January after the performance against Arsenal? There was just one name on their lips:
Twitter: We need a goalscorer… A proven goalscorer… Hate to bang the drum but go for Austin he knows where the net is! #NUFC (@Zadeh7)
Twitter: Charlie Austin please #nufc (@Grey_Ham1)
Twitter: If NUFC had a proven goalscorer we would’ve won that game. Please splash the cash on Charlie Austin ? (@AaronRook91)
Twitter: RT @davidmnufc: Stop messing about #nufc and get charlie austin in this week (@mcgargil)
