As Newcastle United’s senior team continue to falter in front of goal, it appears the academy have unearthed a new gem in Mauro Severino.
The 16-year-old striker plays for Tampere Pallo-Veikot (TPV) in Finland’s third tier, but is currently on trial at Newcastle during the off-season, the Shields Gazette understands.
In a ‘behind closed doors’ friendly match against Blackpool under-18s yesterday, the Finnish striker bagged a hat-trick to help guide the Magpies to victory.

Hat-tricks are clearly Mauro’s specialty as, while on duty for Finland under-16s, he bagged another hat-trick in July.

Should he keep up his fine goalscoring form, you would certainly expect Newcastle to hand Severino a youth contract. Though, the club are slightly unpredictable when it comes to handing contracts to trialists as Dani Koks also appeared to have a successful trial – before returning to Dutch side Willem II.
Next up on the agenda, can Graham Carr find us some top quality defenders, please?
