Former-England boss Steve McClaren insists he is fully focused on gaining promotion with Derby County this season, amid speculation suggesting he is set to fill the current head coach vacancy at St James’ Park.
Ever since Alan Pardew’s departure at the turn of the year, McClaren has been continuously linked with the head coach vacancy at St James’ Park, despite the Geordie faithful being desperate for the club to pursue other targets – such as Remi Garde and Thomas Tuchel.
Despite mounting speculation over his future, the former-Twente coach insists he is fully focused on gaining promotion with Derby this season.
McClaren said: “It is football, it’s newspapers and it is that time of the season. Our focus is on Watford on Friday, and then Wigan on Monday, and the big April we have got ahead.”
“We are focusing on doing a job here, we know where we want to go, and that is the main aim. We said from day one we have got a job to do here, we are focused totally on that. Everything else is irrelevant and speculation.”
Even with McClaren playing down talk, a report published by the Chronicle earlier this week claimed St James’ Park will be his next destination, once Mike Ashley’s board had agreed a compensation package with the Rams – expected to be in the region of £2million.
