Arsenal are set to submit a formal offer to Newcastle for England Under-19 star Freddie Woodman, according to the Mail.
The 18-year-old goalkeeper, who’s established himself as a regular in Newcastle’s under-21 starting line-ups, has attracted the interest of Arsene Wenger following a number of top drawer performances for his club and country. As a result, the Gunners are weighing up a £1million bid for Woodman but they face fierce competition from Premier League rivals Southampton – who are known for their success in recruiting and developing young homegrown players.
Earlier this month, Woodman won the Jack Hixon Trophy – an award given to the hottest prospect in Newcastle. When accepting the award, he said: “It’s been a brilliant twelve months. I have seen things around the first-team that I wouldn’t have otherwise done this early in my career.”
“To win the award was an honour. Alan said to me that some of the names who have won it have not gone on to achieve what they should have done. He said, hopefully, I would. I certainly intend to.”
